The numerous malls that dot the downtown area are almost a tourist attraction in themselves, offering shoppers and non-shoppers alike a scintillating perspective into the art of shopping and the fascinating, multi-faceted destination that is Bangkok.

There are world-class malls spread throughout Bangkok from the bustling downtown district to the sprawling outer suburbs, many of them as much about dining and lifestyle as they are shopping. They woo tourists and residents alike with global and local brand name stores, shops of all manner and interest, restaurants and eateries serving everything from fast food to fine dining cuisine, multiplex cinemas and more.

Here are 12 shopping malls in downtown Bangkok that are more than worth the visit:

Siam Paragon

Siam Paragon is the most famous shopping mall in Bangkok, and is located in the central district of Siam right alongside the main BTS Skytrain station and a main bus route making it easily accessible by public transportation. This high-end mall offers luxury brand name shops galore, including Balenciaga, Burberry, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Mont Blanc, Saint Laurent, Prada and stores of carmakers Bentley, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche.

The ground floor of Siam Paragon is literally a food kingdom, with plenty of restaurants and fast food outlets to choose from. The mall is also home to Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World, the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia where visitors can see hundreds of marine species. A state-of-the-art movie cinema, karaoke and tenpin bowling facilities offer more entertainment opportunities. The walkway, platform and fountain at the front of Siam Paragon is a popular location for taking photos and a spot to be seen at in social media.

Siam Center

Right next door and connected to Siam Paragon, is Siam Center which is popular in particular with beauty and cosmetics shoppers. Here there are three floors of beauty, fashion and cosmetics stores among which is the always busy Sephora from France store selling luxury and niche brands of cosmetics and perfume.

Fashion Avenue, the ground floor at Siam Center, houses flagship stores of famous brands. The main floor is named Fashion Galleria where the many stores sell clothes, accessories and cosmetics. On the Fashion Visionary floor with its stylish décor of wood and metal are stores selling clothes and accessories by Thai designers. The aptly named Food Factory floor offers a choice of international and local restaurants like Bonchon Chicken and Mo & Moshi to name just two, while there’s also the various food stalls of Food Republic.

Siam Discovery

Next to the Siam Center is Siam Discovery, where visitors can walk though from Siam Paragon and Siam Center. Siam Discovery calls itself the first hybrid retail store in Thailand and in 2016 underwent a renovation that cost of over 4 billion baht. This year it has won awards for its innovation, design and creativeness. Altogether there are more than 10,000 brands on offer to shoppers across eight floors.

The ‘Lifestyle Shopping’ concept in play at Siam Discovery sees each floor categorized by lifestyle type. The Her Lab and His Lab floors sell all kinds of female and male products, the Street Lab floor sells street fashion goods from famous brands and the Digital Lab floor has gadgets, techno toys, artist’s items, cameras and stationaries. The Creative Lab floor is focused on award-winning design goods and home and living such as art, craft, decoration, lighting and furniture. The Play Lab floor is where to shop for toys, books, outdoor gear, hobby items and books while there’s also a co-working space. The Retail Innovation Lab is dedicated to fitness and entertainment.

MBK Center

Another of Bangkok’s most famous shopping malls, MBK Center has been a landmark retail address for three decades. Located in the same shopping enclave as Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery, Siam Center and Siam Square One, the mall houses over 2,300 shops across eight floors. It’s known for the array of goods and items on sale at cheap prices.

The various shopping zones at MBK Center include Outlet in Town for fashion products, Craft Village for Thai handicrafts and souvenirs, Camera Master for digital cameras and accessories and Mobile Mania for smartphones, electronic devices and IT gadgets. In the Food Fan zone are numerous restaurants and eateries. There’s plenty of entertainment options in the form of a cinema complex, tenpin bowling and karaoke. MBK Center’s landmark 7-metre high sculpture called Markrub, made by famous artist Lolay, is a popular spot for photo taking.

Siam Square One

Siam Square One is situated opposite Siam Paragon in the fashion hub that is Siam Square. Shoppers can cross over the road between them via the BTS Siam station and pedestrian overpass walkway. This 8-storey shopping mall offers in-trend fashion, beauty, lifestyle and digital technology shops, as well as an impressive array of restaurants and eateries that takes up multiple floors.

KFC, Sizzler, Ootoya, Sukishi, Yayoi, Miyabi, Maisen, Marugame, Seimen, Starbucks and Akiyoshi outlets can all be found here. For fans of a certain Japanese cat, Siam Square One is the location of Sanrio Hello Kitty House where multiple floors are dedicated to all things Hello Kitty. The KBank Siam Pic-Ganesha performing arts centre is also here and comprising of a 1,069-seat theatre, playhouse and studio.

Central World

Situated between the BTS Siam and BTS Chit Lom stations, Central World is equal walking distance from either via the skywalk. It is the 11th largest shopping complex in the world, boasting seven buildings which are divided into nine zones including the fashion, food, furniture and decoration, health and beauty, kids and leisure zones. There are also restaurants, a supermarket, cinema complex, ice skating rink, activity space and knowledge center. Also situated here is the flagship hotel of Centara Hotels & Resorts, Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

The huge area in front of CentralWorld is a popular spot for various festivals and activities, as well as being one of the major New Year countdown venues in Bangkok.

Gaysorn Village

Just across the road from CentralWorld and also with a skywalk connection is Gaysorn Village, serving up a luxury, innovative and arts and lifestyle culture shopping experience. Luxury brand, world-class brand, hi-end brand, world-famous designer brand and top-end local brands can be found here. In the area of fashion and accessories, the stores include Aigner, Bally, Louis Vuitton, Furla, Montblanc and Boyy.

The restaurants in Gaysorn Village are also on a luxury level, among these being 1823 Tea Lounge by Ronnefeldt with its wide array of tea blends, Provence, Paste, Riedel Wine Bar & Cellar and Duke whiskey bar. Amarin Plaza is connected via skywalk to BTS Chit Lom station. It is one of the longstanding addresses when it comes to Bangkok’s shopping malls and where the first McDonald’s outlet in Thailand opened its doors. In 2012 the mall renovated its 4th floor into a food lover’s kingdom that offers The Cook food court and restaurants and outlets serving various cuisines, including Sukhothai Noodle, Yok Yor Legend Thai Food, Papaya Salad and E-sarn Kitchen and Radna Yod Pak 40 Years.

Erawan Bangkok

Erawan Bangkok occupies the corner across from Gaysorn Village, and is connected to BTS Chit Lom station as well as the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok Hotel and Amarin Plaza. Another of the city’s long established malls, it caters nowadays to the urban chic lifestyle set and houses a selection of chic and brand name stores selling fashion and accessories. Among these is Stella McCartney, Alexander Wang and Marni.

A gourmet choice of cuisines can be found at Urban Kitchen including Chinese, Thai and Japanese, while the Erawan Tea Room serves traditional Thai cuisine in a nostalgic atmosphere of a bygone era. The Erawan Bangkok Wellness & Beauty Center sells healing and beauty treatments, products and pampering for the mind, body and soul.

In front of Erawan Bangkok is Erawan Shrine (Phra Phrom Erawan). Throughout the day people come here to pay respect and make ceremonial offerings that can range from floral garlands to fruit to teakwood elephants. Central Chidlom has been a mainstay of the Bangkok shopping mall scene since it opened in 1973 as the flagship of Central Department Store. Connected to BTS Chit Lom station and also Central Embassy which is next door, this 7-storey mall welcomes shoppers with a friendly ambience and a focus on urban lifestyles. The vast lineup of stores sells beauty products, ladies’ and men’s fashion, shoes, handbags, travel goods, electronic gadgets, books, home décor, toys and more.
